I’ve Been There; I’ve Done That!
For the longest time, growing up, I’d wanted to be a lawyer. Although I did briefly consider other career paths (I graduated from college with an English degree and a high school teaching certificate, I ultimately went to law school at Rutgers University at their Camden campus, graduating in 1985.
For 15 years I worked for other people, but in 2000 I got the “entrepreneurial itch” and decided to go out on my own. I soon realized that, in order to make a living, I had better start bringing in clients and work. No one else was going to do it but me. I also had no help, no secretary, no paralegal, no marketing manager. I had to figure it out for myself.
Fortunately, I had always been a bit of a “techno-nerd,” so all of the computer-based tools for success came naturally to me. I knew that the internet and web sites were the future, so I immediately established a web site and started writing content. By later partnering with the right companies and coaches, I developed a sophisticated information-based direct marketing approach for my firm. By writing good content I was able to attract the right prospects and market to them to grow my business.
But did I mention that I had no help? With it being just me, and having only so many hours in a day, I learned how to manage my time to get more done. I read all I could from experts on time management and became more efficient. Then I learned that efficiency only gets you so far. I started learning about, and implementing, automation of many tasks, m so that my computer system could do many of the mundane tasks for me, thus freeing up time for more profitable pursuits.
Since it was only me, I also learned early on that if I wanted to take a vacation from the office, my office had to be anywhere. This became particularly true during the COVID-19 pandemic. My office had to be anywhere, so I moved my practice to the cloud and became a paperless practice, so that my office (and files) was wherever I was with my laptop and my cell phone.
I can now do more, earn more, and have an independent, financially free life!
