Why Am I Struggling to Manage My Time?
Rethinking Productivity for Lawyers Who Want Their Time — and Their Life — Back
If you’ve ever caught yourself staring at your calendar wondering, “Why am I struggling to manage my time?”, you’re not alone. Whether you’re a new solo or small firm attorney trying to keep your head above water or a seasoned small firm owner juggling a growing caseload, time management can feel like an impossible puzzle.
But here’s the truth: at the end of the day, it’s not really about planners, apps, or perfectly color-coded schedules. The real challenge? Self-leadership. And that starts with how you think about time itself.
The Lawyer Time Management Trap
When most lawyers think of time management, they think of doing more. More checklists. More hustle. More late nights. But true productivity isn’t about doing more—it’s about doing what matters most, in a way that’s aligned with your energy, values, personal and business goals, and season of life.
Let’s reframe this: lawyer time management is not just about how efficiently you pack your day. It’s about how intentionally you lead yourself through your day.
Because here’s the secret: not every hour needs to be optimized. Some hours need to be honored.
Rethinking the Morning Myth
There was a time when my mornings looked like this: coffee, some light reading (in warmer weather on my deck), and listening to a podcast or two. Was I wasting time? That depends on how you define “waste.”
We budget money for joy (and financial independence). But what if we did the same with time for spiritual and mental joy? A morning rhythm that envigorates and energizes you might be the very thing that fuels sharper thinking, better decisions, and deeper client connections later in the day.
If your current time management system doesn’t allow space for what brings you energy, it’s not sustainable, and it’s certainly not serving you.
Identity > Habits
One of the most powerful shifts you can make is this:
Don’t define yourself by your habits. Shape your habits around who you want to become.
Maybe you’ve always worked 10-hour days. Maybe you’ve always skipped lunch or answered emails at midnight. But those patterns don’t have to define your future. Transformation happens when you stop letting old habits dictate your identity—and start creating systems that support the lawyer (and human) you’re becoming.
This is why productivity isn’t one-size-fits-all. Your relationship with time is personal. Your energy patterns, family demands, and mental focus fluctuate throughout the day, week, and year. The best productivity system? The one that honors your life, your body, and your business.
Reclaiming Time Begins with Reframing Time
The biggest breakthroughs often come not from optimizing more, but from releasing guilt, comparison, or perfectionism that silently drain your time and energy.
Instead of asking, “How can I do more?” ask:
- Where can I release pressure?
- Where can I reclaim rhythm?
- What if productivity looked like peace instead of pressure?
Changing how you manage your time always begins with changing how you think about it. When you let go of unrealistic expectations and start creating a rhythm that reflects who you are now—not who you think you should be—you unlock more than just extra minutes. You unlock clarity, confidence, and control.
Tasks and goals are much easier to achieve when they are things you truly want to achieve. Thus your time management goals have to be connected to your core desires and life goals? How important is having the time to go to your kids’ soccer game, have a quite dinner out with your spouse, or spend quality time with your friends?
What Happens When It Sticks
Here’s the good news: time management doesn’t have to be a constant struggle. When you shift your mindset, align your systems with your values, and stop trying to copy someone else’s routine, time becomes your ally, not your enemy.
And yes, you can absolutely learn a better way to manage your time that sticks. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be yours.
